Venice, a city in the Veneto region of northern Italy, is renowned for its unique architecture built atop a lagoon. Comprising over 118 islands connected by 177 canals and 401 bridges, Venice is an enchanting city that seems to float on water. It was settled in the fifth century AD by refugees seeking protection from northern invasions, and it gradually became a major trading power, especially after the Fourth Crusade (1202-04), when it established a colonial empire that included Crete, Euboea, the Cyclades, the Ionian Islands, and footholds in Morea and Epirus. In the 15th century, the Venetian Republic expanded into a substantial Italian state, though it eventually lost its eastern possessions to the Ottoman Turks. The city was part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy from 1805 to 1815 and then returned to Austria before being ceded to Italy in 1866. Despite some damage during World War II, Venice remains largely intact, and its architecture, which reflects Italian, Arabic, Byzantine, and Renaissance styles, is a testament to its rich history.
