Butterflies are common all over the world, but the ones in hot countries are usually bigger and more brightly colored than those in cooler countries and there are more different kinds. Usually the male butterflies more brightly colored than the female. The female have bigger and heavier bodies, since they carry the eggs. The gay (鲜艳的) colors of the male help to attract (吸引) the female and the duller colors of the female make them less likely to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs.

Some butterflies have a bright pattern of colors on the upper surface of their wings, which show when they fly, but when they rest on a tree or leaf, they close their wings. On the undersides of their wings there are green and brown markings which look like the tree or leaf. They are then difficult to see. The best example of this is the Dead Leaf Butterfly. When its wings are close, it looks exactly like a dead leaf. There are even marks that look like the holes in a dead leaf. When a bird is chasing a butterfly, and it close its wings, it seems to have disappeared completely.

Many butterflies have round marks on their wings that look like eyes. When they are resting, and their wings are folded, these cannot be seen. When a bird sees one, and begins to attack it, the butterfly opens its wings. The bird thinks that it sees two eyes staring at it, and it is frightened to fly away. 1. Where are the butterflies always bigger and more brightly colored?

A. In the places where it is hot. B. In the places that are far from the sun. C. In the south. D. In the north.

2. Why do the female butterflies have bigger and heavier bodies?

A. They can help than to attract the male.

B. They can make them likely to be caught by enemies. C. They carry eggs.

D. They don't like to fly higher.

3. What are green and brown markings on the undersides of the butterflies' wings for?

A. The butterflies want to show them when they fly.

B. It is helpful for them to chase a bird.

C. When the butterflies close their wings, they disappeared completely. D. The markings can sometimes help to protect the butterflies.

When a group of children politely stop a conversation with you, saying, \"We have to go to work now\children working is just unthinkable. That is, until you are told that they are all pupils of stage schools and that the \"work\" they go off to is to go on the stage in a theatre.

Stage schools often act as agencies (代理机构) to supply children for stage and television work. More worthy of the name \"stage school\" are those few places where children attend full time with a training for the theatre and a general education.

A visit to such schools will leave you in no doubt that the children enjoy themselves. After all, what lively children wouldn't settle for spending only half the day doing ordinary schoolwork and acting, singing or dancing their way through the other half of the day?

Then of course there are times for the children to make a name and make a little money in some big shows. Some stage schools give their children too much professional work at such a young age. But the law is very tight on the amount they can do. Those under 13 are limited to 40 days in the year; those over 13 do 80 days.

The schools themselves admit that not all children will be successful in the profession for which they are being trained. So what happens to those who don't make it? While all the leading schools say they place great importance on children getting good study results, the facts seem to suggest this is not always the case.

1. People would stop feeling uneasy when realizing that the children they're talking to ________.

A. attend a stage school B. are going to the theatre

C. have got some work to do D. love singing and dancing

2. In the writer's opinion, a good stage school should _________.

A. produce star performers

B. help pupils improve their study skills C. train pupils in language and performing arts D. provide a general education and stage training

3. \"Professional work\" as used in the text means_________.

A. ordinary school work B. money-making performances C. stage training at school

D. acting, singing or dancing after class

4. Which of the following best describes how the writer feels about stage schools?

A. He thinks highly of what they have to offer.

B. He favors an early start in the training of performing arts. C. He feels uncomfortable about children putting on night shows . D. He doubts the standard of ordinary education they have reached .

Women earn less than men. For example, in 1988 the hourly wages of women in the U.S. were 16% less than those of men. The gap between male and female incomes varies (变化)with age. The gap between the labor incomes of young women and young men is much smaller than that between middle-aged women and men. It is also clear that jobs in which women are concentrated (集中) pay less. The larger the number of workers who are women is, the lower the average wages are.

Why do women earn less than men? Is the cause of the gap that women are looked down upon? If so, the government has to intervene (干涉), to force the employers to pay equal wages to equal jobs. However, there is no agreement among economists (经济学家) about the causes of the gap. One view argues that women have chosen low-paying jobs in which workers enjoy the freedom of entering and leaving the labor, which reduces their years of experience relative to men. Other people say the gap can also be explained by the difference in educational background. It is just the difference that cause the difference in productivity between men and women.

Much of the gap, however, has not been fully explained. It might be the result of some bias against women. What would happen if the government did intervene to increase the wages paid to women? One possibility is that incomes for women as a group might actually decline (下降). An increase in wage decreases the demanded (被需求的) quantity of labor input, and then the rate of hiring new workers declines. The result will be a surplus of labor. 1.The difference is not very obvious between __________.

A. young men and young women

B. middle-aged men and middle-aged women C. young men and middle-aged women D. young women and middle-aged men

2.Some economists believe women earn less than men partly because _________.

A. women are less experienced than men

B. women have more freedom in selecting their jobs C. there are more women than men in the labor D. they are only provided with low-paying jobs

3.Which of the following cannot be inferred from the second paragraph?

A. Women receive less education than men.

B. Goods produced by women are not as good as those by men. C. Women can' t make the same productivity as men.

D. Economists don' t think the causes of the gap are women' s being looked down upon.

4.What does author suggest that for the women workers the government should do?

A. To pay as much as men.

B. To explain why women are paid less. C. To force employers to hire less men. D. None of the above.

5.What would happen if women's wages were raised? A. The unemployment rate would go up.

B. Women as a group would earn more than before. C. Men as a group would earn less than before. D. The women would own more money than men.

Nomads (游牧部落) are people who have no fixed homes but move regularly from place to place. Hunting peoples, such as the Bushmen, Pygmies (俾格米人,中非个子矮小的一种黑人) and

Australian aborigines (土著人) move in search of large animal population. Pastoral (适于放牧牛羊的) nomads, in the Middle East and Central Asia, move with the seasons to find pasture (牧场) for their animals. Other patrol peoples, also dependent on the seasons, grow crops but move to other places after their crops need no attention. Some agricultural workers, in the United States particularly, follow a nomadic life also, going northward during the growing and harvesting season and returning to the warmer southern regions in the winter. Generally speaking, the nomads' movements are regulated by the seasons and the effects of the seasons on plants and animal lives.

(有机组织) Hereditary (遗传的) differences meet needs of various environments. (环境) But among human beings, differences in head form and in other physical features (特征) are not, in most cases, clearly adaptive. Nor is it clear that mental capacities of races are different. As far as we know, the races are equally intelligent (聪明的) and equally capable of solving their problems of living together. The different ways of life, it seems, are social and learned differences and not physical and hereditary differences. It stands to reason, therefore, that man's adjustment to his surroundings should be studied in custom and institution (制度), not in anatomy (身体结构) and neural structure (神经系统的构造). 1.According to the paragraph, anyone who wanted to study human adaptation to environment should do so through the field of _______.

PALO ALTO, California - \"Switching off the television may help prevent children from getting fatter - even if they do not change their diet or increase the amount they exercise,\" US researchers said last week.

A study of l92 third and fourth graders, generally aged eight and nine, found that children who cut the number of hours spent watching television gained nearly two pounds ( 0.91 kg ) less over a one-year period than those who did not change their television diet .

\"The findings are important because they show that weight loss can only be the result of a reduction in television viewing and not any other activity,\" said Thomas Robinson, a pediatrician (儿科专家) at Stanford University.

\"American children spend an average of more than four hours per day watching television and

videos or playing video games, and rates of childhood being very fat have doubled over the past 20 years,\" Robinson said .

In the study, presented this week to the Pediatric Academic Societies' annual meeting in San Francisco, the researchers persuaded about 100 of the students to reduce their television viewing by one-quarter to one-third.

Children watching fewer hours of television showed a significantly smaller increase in waist size and had less body fat than other students who continued their normal television viewing, even though neither group ate a special diet or took part in any extra exercise.

\"One explanation for the weight loss could be the children unstuck to the television may simply have been moving around more and burning off calories,\" Robinson said.

If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like \"Shakespeare,\" \"Samuel Johnson,\" and \"Webster,\" but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn't even speak English-William the Conqueror.

Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would be close to German.

But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction (区别) between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class

Normans were doing most of the eating.

When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more \"foreign\" than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man's ambition.

1.The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before 1066 were______.

2.Which of the following groups of words are, by inference, rooted in French?

3.Why does France appear less foreign than Germany to Americans on their first visit to Europe?

4.What is the subject discussed in the text?

A. The history of Great Britain.

B. The similarity between English and French. C. The rule of England by William the Conqueror. D. The French influences on the English language . A. Most advertisements in France appear in English. B. They know little of the history of the English language. C. Many French words are similar to English ones. D. They know French better than German. In some parts of the United States, farming is easy. But farming has always been difficult in the northeastern corner of the country, which is called New England.

New England has many trees and thin, rocky soil. Anyone who has wanted to start a new farm there has had to work very hard. The first job has been cutting down the trees. The new job has been digging out the roots of the trees. Then the farmer has had the difficult job of removing stones from his land. This work of removing stones never really ends, because every winter more stones appear. They come up through the thin soil from the rocks below. Farmers have to keep removing stones from the fields. Even today, farms which have been worked on for two hundred years still keep producing more stones. That is why stone walls are used instead of fences in New England fields. The stone walls are not high and a man can easily climb over them. However, they keep the farmer's cows from joining those of his neighbour's .

English surnames have an interesting history. In early times people had just one name that they were given at birth. It might have been John or Hilda, for example. One name was quite enough. If someone mentioned Hilda or John, everyone knew who was meant because there would be only one Hilda or one John in a tiny village. But as time went on, small villages grew into towns. Then there might be five or six Johns and five or six Hildas all living in the same place. How were people to know which John or which Hilda was meant then?

One way of getting over the difficulty was by adding the name of the work the person did. Thus the man who was a cook might be called John the Cook. The man who weaved clothes might be called Joan the Weaver. Second names or, surnames as we now call them, had come into being. In time these surnames were given to a man' s children. So John Weaver's children would, perhaps, be called Hilda Weaver and Charles Weaver. And this is how we still use surnames today.

Another way of telling one person from another with the same name was by adding the place where they lived. Thus the two men in the same village, both with the name of Tom, might be known as Tom by the Wood and Tom in the Field. This would give rise to such surnames as Wood, Field, Street, Tree, Pond, Lake, Forest, etc.

The origin of many surnames is easy to find. But how others started is difficult to know. Only scholars who have studied the history of words can tell the origin of the more difficult ones, and even then they can' t always be sure.

1.In early times English people________.

A. had only one name given at birth

B. had two names: John and Hilda C. had two given names at birth D. had no name at birth

2.People found it difficult to distinguish people with only one name ________.

A. when they started to use it

A. trade C. social position

B. clothes D. family

4.People use wood as their surnames because ________.

A. they lived near a place where many trees grew B. they were farmers C. they lived in a village D. it was a common thing

5.The passage mainly tells us about________. A. how some English names started

B. why so many people were named John and Smith C. the history of the English words D. the history of the English people

There is a saying that cats have nine lives. A recent study examined why. Scientists carried out a study of cats which had fallen out of windows of buildings. Nine out of ten remained (保持) alive after a fall of two storeys or more. One cat which fell from the thirty-second floor of a building only broke a tooth. Interestingly, the cats were in greatest danger of being killed if they fell from the seventh floor. Falling from either a less or greater height gave them a better chance of survival (幸存).

Damage to a body depends on how fast it hits the ground, which in turn depends on how far it has fallen. But it's not quite that simple, because, as an object falls through the air, the air holds it back and slows the object down. After a while the object stops accelerating and continues at a fixed speed. This is the terminal (极限的) speed. Bulky (肥胖的) things have a lower terminal speed because there is a larger area for the air to push up on. Heavy things have a higher terminal speed because they push down harder against the air. Cats have a lower terminal speed than falling people , for example , because they are quite bulky and not very heavy so that they hit the ground more slowly and are less likely to be hurt.

Then why does the seventh floor matter? This is the distance cats take to reach their terminal speed. After the seventh floor, they may relax (放松) and spread out their legs like a flying squirrel and change their falling position so that they may land on their feet. This would slow them down and allow their muscles to reduce the force of impact , and thus reduce the damage.

1.The underlined word \"accelerating\" in the second paragraph probably means ______.

A. moving faster B. moving slower C. moving at a fixed speed D. moving at a normal speed

2.The scientists came to a conclusion that a fall from_________ floor was most likely to kill a cat.

A. sixth

B. eighth

C. thirty-third

D. seventh

I would like to say that I have a typical life, but most people would disagree. What I consider routine most people consider unusual: for my mother is dying.

Here' s a typical scenario: I come home from field hockey (曲棍球) practice to find my mother unconscious on the floor. Instead of watching television, calling friends or doing homework, I spend at least four hours in the emergency room. To me, giving up everything to help her is not only typical, it's my duty. I wouldn't do anything differently.

Just because it's \"routine\" doesn't mean it's not upsetting. Many nights I cry myself to sleep. I'm afraid to walk in the door because I might find my mom dead. It's tough to have people stare at you because your mother's in a wheelchair.

I love my mom, but sometimes that's the hardest part. It's tough to see someone you love deteriorate (恶化). I have trouble putting on a happy face and pretending everything's okay. When people ask what's wrong, or ask how she is doing, I have to say, \"It's heart problems\" or \"She' s doing the same.\" If I say anything more, I'll get upset. Mortality (致命性) is a hard pill to swallow-even when it is someone else's pill.

Dealing with death is a brutal task. It makes you grow up too fast and robs people of someone

they love. It loads on responsibilities you never thought you would have, Death sacrifices your feelings and leaves nothing in its wake. It makes you realize how serious the words \"irregular heartbeat\" and \"heart failure\" are. I'm not alone, either. I'm the daughter of a dying mother. 1.What's the trouble with the author?

A. Her mother was dying. C. She slept alone.

B. She had a hard headache. D. She would do housework herself.

2.Who finds mother unconscious on the floor in the scenario?

A. Her neighbor. C. The author' s sister.

B. The author. D. The author' s father.

3.What's the author' s reflect to mother unconscious ?

A. She stands there and does nothing. B. She calls for emergency aid. C. She is crying.

D. She becomes very helpless.

4.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. Death sacrifices your feelings and leaves nothing in its wake . B. Dealing with death is a brutal task. C. The author doesn't love her mom.

D. The author is afraid to walk in the door when her mother is dying.

5.What's the best title for the passage? A. A Poor Girl. C. A Scenario.

B. A Good Mother.

D. I'm The Daughter of A Dying Mother.

The United States is full of cars. There are still many families without cars, but some families have two or more. However, cars are used for more than pleasure. They are a necessary part of life.

Cars are used for business. They are driven to offices and factories by workers who have no other way to get to their jobs. When salesmen are sent to different parts of the city, they have to drive in order to carry their products. Farmers have to drive into the city in order to get supplies.

Sometimes small children must be driven to school. In some cities school buses are used only when children live more than a mile away from the school. When the children are too young to walk too far, their mothers take turns driving them to school. One mother drives on Mondays taking her own children and the neighbours' children as well. Another mother drives on Tuesdays, another on Wednesdays, and so on. This is called forming a car pool. Men also form car pools, with three or four

men taking turns driving to the place where they all work.

More car pools should be formed in order to put fewer cars on the road and use less gas. Too many cars are being driven. Something will have to be done about the use of cars. 1.The United States is filled with cars, but _______.

A. Small children are driven to school.

B. All children go to school by bus in some cities. C. Mothers drive their children who can't walk to school. D. School buses pick up all children.

4.Mothers form car pools in order that ________.

D. they can drive their children to school in time

5.The traffic (交通) in and around cities is a great problem because ________. A. too many cars are being driven B. there are too many car pools C. people put fewer cars on the roads D. there is less gas

When Mark left school he did not really know what he wanted to do. He first worked in an office, but he found that it was very boring. He did the same things day after day. This was also the trouble with his second job in a car factory. He then decided he would like to work out of doors and got a job as a gardener working in one of London's many parks.

He now works much harder than he did in the office or at the factory, but his work is more different. There are, after all, four seasons in a year and each has its own special jobs for a gardener. He works hardest in the autumn and winter keeping the park tidy and preparing for the spring and summer. In the summer he can rest and feel proud that he has helped to make the park so beautiful. Many people visit the park then and he is always pleased when he hears them say how lovely it looks.

A wind is a current (气流) of air moving over the land or sea. The direction of a wind is the direction from which it has come, and not the direction in which it is going. For example, a south wind is blowing from the south towards the north. A wind vane (风向标) points in the direction of a wind. The strength of a wind can vary (变化) from a light breeze (微风) to a hurricane. The Beaufort Scale (蒲福风级) is the system that weathermen use to describe the strength and speed of a wind. Winds are produced because the pressure of the air is different in different places. Air flows from a region (区域) of high pressure to a region of low pressure, causing a wind. The heat of the sun on the earth pressure to a region of low pressure, causing a wind. The heat of the sun of the earth produced pressure differences and winds.

In the tropics (热带地区) the heat makes the air expand (膨胀). As it gets lighter and riser, cooler air from surrounding regions move in to take the place of rising air. This change causes winds to blow towards the tropics. These winds are called the trade winds. 1. A wind is _______.

A. the heat of the sun B. the cooler air C. a current of air moving

D. the direction from which the air has come

2. The direction of a wind is the direction _________.

A. In which it is going B. from which it has come

People from many parts of the world brought their children to Australia to receive treatment by this wonderful nurse. She was invited to America where her methods were used in many hospitals. There is a lake near a forest in Sweden. The water in the lake is very clear and everything is quiet and still. On the far side of the water is some farmland and further away, across the field, is an old church built on a hill. It has just stopped raining. The brook(小溪) flowing into the lake is full and there is still some half-melted (半融化的) snow from last winter on the ground.

The reason the water is so clear, and everything is so quiet and still, is that most of the plant and animal life in and around the lake is dead. There are no birds because all the fish and insects, which the birds need for food, have disappeared. Many trees in the forest are losing their leaves and bark (树皮), and are sick and dying. Others were blown down by the high winds of last winter. A farmer is working in a field planting something, but unless he plants a stronger kind of seed this year, the crop will be between 25 to 40 per cent lower than a few years ago. The stones of the old church tower are turning to powder and unless the tower is repaired soon, it will fall down.

All the death and destruction in this place is caused by the smoke coming out of factories and poisonous gases from cars and trucks. And yet this silent lake is hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest factory and highway.

Everything that is new or uncommon raises a pleasure in the imagination, and because it fills the soul with a pleasant surprise, satisfies its curiosity, and gives it an idea which it did not possess (拥有)before. We are too much familiar with one set of objects and tired out with so many repeated shows of the same things and whatever is new or uncommon contributes (促成)a little to vary(使变样)human life with the strangeness of its appearance: it serves us for a kind of refreshment(提神), and takes off that satiety (厌烦)we tend to complain of in our usual and ordinary activities. It is this variety that gives our mind something new and relieves (解脱)our attention from dwelling (滞留) too long and wasting itself on any particular object. It is this, likewise, that improves what is great or beautiful, and makes it afford our mind a double pleasure. Woods, fields, and meadows are at any season of the year pleasant to look upon but never so much as in the beginning of the spring, when they are all new and fresh and not yet too much familiar to the eye. For this reason there is nothing that makes a prospect more wonderful than rivers or sprays of water from fountains (喷泉)where the scene is constantly new. We are quickly tired with looking upon hills and valleys where everything remains fixed and settled in the

same place and manner, but find our thoughts a little excited and relieved at the sight of such objects as are ever in motion.

A. make the readers laugh

B. improve the readers' sense of beauty C. present the readers a new idea D. let the readers examine their mistakes

3. In which season does the author think are woods, fields and meadows the most pleasant to look upon?

A. Winter. B. Autumn. C. Spring. D. Any season.

4. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage? A. The new is always better than the old.

B. The old must be replaced (替代)by the new for refreshment. C. People like new things and hate old things. D. Newness makes a thing wonderful.

Attitude isn’t quite everything when it comes to being successful, but attitude plays a part in every stage of your life A poor attitude gets more people fired than any other single factor, and a good attitude gets people jobs and helps them keep those jobs more than any other factor.

Your attitude affects many people, from your family to the stranger on the street comer.Your attitude is particularly important when you face seemingly hopeless situations.Losing a job or friend because of a poor attitude is unfortunate—especially because a had attitude can be fixed.

You call find at least two ways to look at everything.A pessimist looks for difficulty in the opportunity, while an optimist looks for opportunity in the difficulty.A poet of long ago put the difference between optimism and pessimism this way:two men looked out from prison bars—one saw mud,the other saw stars. Unfortunately, many people look only at the problem and not at the opportunity that lies within the problem. Many employees complain about the difficulty of their jobs, for example, not realizing that if the job were simple, the employer would hire someone with less ability at a lower wage.A small coin can hide even the sun if you hold the coin close enough to your eye.So when you get too close to your problems,to think objectively about them.try to keep in mind how your vision can be obstructed.Take a step back, and look at the situation from a new angle. You can’t do anything to change the fact that a problem exists, but you can do a great deal to find the opportunity within that problem. You’re guaranteed a better tomorrow by doing your best today and developing a plan of action for the tomorrows that lie ahead.Just remember to maintain a positive mental attitude.
